J.J.'s DN-HC4500 + Traktor Pro TSI MIDI Mapper

  • I’m working on 2 Custom MIDI Mapper for the DN-HC4500 and Traktor Pro. When I’m finished, I will update the PDF and create a video.
  • • Display Support (Display adding Latency was fixed in Traktor 2.0)
  • —–May cause USB traffic jam
  • —–Use only if you own a MAC or Audio 8
  • —–Use only if you love to see the Track’s Title nonstop scrolling
  • • No Display Support
  • —–Low Latency (Better Performance)
  • —–Cue LED stays on when Cued. Play LED flashes while Paused. Jog Wheel & Parameter Blue LED is always ON.
  • You have to be a registered member to download. Once you Log In, you can see the downloaded link below.

I finally took the HC4500 out of the rack yesterday. I’ve been BETA testing the new Rane Sixty-Eight for the last month. Great mixer but it still needs improvement.

I’ve tried to post all the changes I did on the No Display TSI so I could reprogram them on the Display TSI.

The effects are pretty tricky. Mainly because when your editing, your in a different Modifier. So for every action, you have to copy it 2 other times. It will take about 2 hours just to figure where I was at, then I can start programing again djyan.

Like Smoky Robinson says, “I Second That Emotion”. Feels and looks like a dead controller with no display. We need you J.J. My money is waiting to send to you. Mobile gigs been going for me like crazy lately and would love the display. DjYan feels the same way.

How do you guys stand the constant scrolling of the artist/title?

Traktor’s display support IS the worst in the Industry.

It never bothered me at all. Just hate looking at a blank/dead screen. I’m on a MacBook pro so my computer can handle it unlike pcs

Same for me. A blank/dead screen on my Denon would feel creepy :-) Although i actually look at the screen of my MacBook pro all the time for 95%…

JJ, i’ve tried your tsi file for the dns-3700 but the only thing that works is the play button. But the file on the Denon site works fine, because i’ve got also an X1, i can use all the effects. But the tsi. on the Denon site is only for 2 players, how can i change them for four players, like your tsi. for the HC 4500. Also i’ve got the dnx1600, but when i change from midi to cd, it shuts down the program, so i’m using back my Maya, but my latencu is 11ms. When i would buy soundcard grom NI, would i get the latency lower, or is my computer to slow? I can also upgrade tot Traktor Scratch, so i can play with timecode with this mixer and i normally i can then change to cd’s without shutting the program. What would you recomend? It would be nice to play with two decks over 4 channels, like with my hc4500.

update to the problem is that the link works, but it also says “Page Not Found” in the header in the browser, and displays the main page. I shall check it out again when I get home from work, but something to look into possibly?

      Update 2:
you should use a third line of code for each deck to enable switching between scratch mode and jog mode, and assign a button to it:
      Quote:

Now overall, apart from your normally mapped controls, your Midi Config XML should contain something like this:

      Scratch Mode/Jog Mode
      Touching the Platter

(FOLLOWED BY YOUR REGULAR MAPPINGS HERE)

      To explain the code:
Midi Channel 8 is for left Deck, midi channel 9 for right deck
Note 89 is for “touching the platter” on either side, the platter is considered touched if a “Note on” with value >= 64 is sent.
The platter is considered released when a “note off” with value <= 63 is sent.
For the Movement: while the platter is allready touched, the platter must send CC 76 on the corresponding channel , where sending of values between 0 and 63 is backwards movement and 64 to 127 is forward movement
(waveforms move as long as something is sent. value determines speed and direction of movement)

OK guys. I get the Audio 8 in today. You know what that means? I will be able to start working on the DN-HC4500 with display support. I tried it with the new Traktor S4 but the Denon Controller support is not in that software.

What needs to be finished with display support? I’m thinking… Stop the platter from getting stuck and effects. Anything else that is missing?

Hey jj. It’s nice to hear that you’re gonna work on the display version of the tsi. There is actually one thing acting weird in the no-display tsi version, which is the effects section (maybe I’m doing something wrong).
The thing is: you activate the effect and the led becomes green; then you can switch to “adjust mode”, with an orange led and adjust the effect knob, but, I don’t know how, after that I get a red led and can’t get out of there; and nothing works as expected…did you notice that?

      Thank you

To turn On the first effect, hit the effect 1 button. The LED will turn Green. Hit the same effect button to turn it off. To control effect 1 amount, Dry/Wet or to select other effects, Hold down Flip + Effect 1. The LED will turn Red or Orange if you have Effect 1 ON. From here you can: 1.Change the Effect Amount by rotating the Jog 2. Change the Wet/Dry by rotating the Parameter Knob [PM] 3. Select different FX using the [< <] or [>>] buttons. To exit Effect 1 mode, simply push FLIP or PITCH/KEY. This is taken from the HC4500 Traktor Pro.pdf that can be downloaded in the original post.
        • [Effect 1] = Chained FX 1 On/Off
        • [Effect 1] = Advanced FX On/Off
        • [Flip] + [Effect] = FX Mode (LED Red when ON)
        • [Flip] + [Effect] then [PM] rotate = FX Dry/Wet
        • [Flip] + [Effect] then [Jog] rotate = FX 1 Amount
        • [Flip] + [Effect] then [< <] or [>>]= FX Select

[Flip] or [Pitch/Key] + [Eect] = FX Mode (LED Red when ON)
Press [Flip] or [Pitch/Key] Again to Exit

Thank you djreaper. I started work on adding effects to the display version. I believe I still need to fix the jog wheel freezing in that version.

I’ve been waiting on the Audio 8. However, even with the Audio 8 drivers, there is still a lot of hiccups in the audio… even at the highest latency. So frustrating.

      3) Dry/Wet – knob

      6) Save Sample
      7) Slot Gain – knob
      8 ) Slot Volume – knob
      9) Slot filter (on/off)
      10) Slot Filter Amount – knob
      11) Sample Play
      12) Sample Trigger
      13) Group Play
      14) Group Trigger
      15) Slot Mute/Unmute
      16) Slot retrigger
      17) Copy From Loop Recorder
      18) Copy From Slot
      19) Slot Play Mode (options: one shot/looped)
      20) Slot Size x2
      21) Slot Size /2
      22) Slot Size Reset
      23) Slot Phase Sync
      24) Slot Scratch On

      28) Slot Tempo Bend
      29) Slot Tempo Fader

TP2 may add or change something …

        djsteve,

I’m working on a new map for Traktor 2. NI fixed the latency problem when it outputted to the HID display. Plus, we can share channels with the new update. For instance, with just a 2 stereo output like the HC4500, we can assign Deck 1 and Deck 3 to run in Stereo Out 1.

I briefly tried the no-display version and found a few small errors while using the new Traktor 2. I would be very careful while using it.

I also plan to use the 5 Cue Points to Trigger the Samplers. I don’t know how I’m going to implement it though.

      Display Support Updated 05/15/2011

Fixed: ‘Scratch ON’ for the Jog Wheel freezes the player until the Jog Wheel is touched again.
Added: ‘Deck Focus Select’ for all 4 decks. When you hit Playlist to go to Deck C (left side) or Deck D (right side), the Play, Loop (Loop ON) and Cue LED’s should return to the decks state. For instance, if you have 4 Cues on deck A, then switch to Deck C and back to Deck A, the 4 Cue LED lights should turn back on.
To Do: Effects still don’t work yet.
To Do: If the Deck is a Sample Deck, then the Cue Points will trigger the sampler’s. Flip + Cue 1 might be to add current loop to Sample Deck 1. I haven’t figured it out. I will have to look how the S4 does this.
To Do: Increase Jog Sensitivity for Pitch Bend.

It worked great on a 2 hour session I did last night. I will test again tonight and tomorrow. Traktor 2.0 changed a few things in MIDI, so it needs more testing.

I might have to tweak the Jog Wheel Scratch sensitivity. It looks like a few things are still missing like Range + PM Knob Turn for FILTER. Adding a On/Off for the effects should be easy. However, Flip + Effect 1-3 will take some time to add.

EDIT *** This has nothing to do with the mapper in Traktor.
Blackie Lox got SSL drop native support for the 4500 on his mac. Got it to work on my Mac with MidiPipe. Pipeline looks like this:

      Midi In: DN-HC4500 (“hijack” UNCHECKED)
Midi Out: MidiPipe Output 1 (“Use Note Off Velocity” UNCHECKED, “Pass Through” CHECKED)

      Found error, Right side only:
Flip + Hot Cue 3-5 = Deletes and starts Hot Cue. It should just delete the Hot Cue for Deck B and D, not start the Hot Cue. Flip = Hot Cue 1-2 work fine. The Left Side (Deck A & C) work fine. I will fix and add Effects.

Deck Focus select to remember the LED’s when the layer is switched back doesn’t always work. I will do more research.
***EDIT: Found why Deck Focus didn’t remember the LED’s when the layer was switched. When hitting the Eject/Playlist button to switch layer (Modifier 2:0,1 and 6:0,1), I already programed them to disable the LED’s.
Got FX Group to Toggle On/OFF for all 4 decks. Working on FX Single now. Flip + Effect 1 = Effect Parameters will take some time (next week hopefully).

Side note: The Jog Wheel for Pitch Bend is maxed out: 300% Sensitivity and 100% Acceleration. For faster Pitch Bend, use the Pitch Bend Buttons. To adjust this, go to Preferences, Transport/ Tempo Bend: Sensitivity 0-200%. I have it set to 100% and “Tempo Bend Progressive Sensitivity” CHECKED.

This mapper is sick! I will upload tomorrow:

Fixed: Deck Focus works. Deleted previous LED off when switching Decks.

Fixed: Flip + Hot Cues 3-5 on right side. When deleting Hot Cues 3-5, it would jump to Cue instead of just deleting it.

Note: For Jog Wheel Pitch bend and Wet/Dry, the maximum sensitivity is maxed out. 300% Sensitivity and 100% Acceleration. You cannot go faster because of the Native Support.

      Added:
      Deck 1 = FX 1
      Deck 2 = FX 2
      Deck 3 = FX 3
      Deck 4 = FX 4
      Group Effects
      • [Flip] + [Jog] rotate = F/X Dry/Wet
      • [Effect 1] = Chained FX 1 On/Off (Effect 1 LED Green)
      • [Effect 2] = FX Chained Eect 2 On/Off (Effect 2 LED Green)
      • [Effect 3] = FX Chained Eect 3 On/Off (Effect 3 LED Green)

      Single Effects
      • [Flip] + [Jog] rotate = F/X Dry/Wet
      • [Effect 1] = Advanced FX On/Off (Effect 1 LED Green)
      • [Effect 2] = Advanced FX Button (Effect 2 LED Green)
      • [Effect 3] = Advanced FX Button (Effect 3 LED Green)

      Still need:
[Flip] or [Pitch/Key] + [Eect] = FX Mode (LED Red when ON)
Press [Flip] or [Pitch/Key] Again to Exit
      • Flip + Effect to adjust each effect with the Jog Wheel, select effects etc.
      • [Pitch/Key] + [Jog] rotate = Mixer Key Amount
      • [Pitch/Key] + [PM] rotate = Move Loop 1 Bar
      or
      • [Pitch/Key] + [PM] rotate = Mixer Filter Amount

      This will take a while…

Fixed: Cue LED on Deck A was assigned to Device Target. So when you hit Cue on Deck B, Deck A Cue would also light up RED.

Fixed: Play LED for Deck B and Deck D wasn’t assigned to the modifier layers. So when you hit Playlist to go to Deck D, it wouldn’t update the LED for that layer.

Fixed: Added correct Modifiers to Deck Focus Select. If you do Flip + Playlist = Only Browser Toggle, it would change Deck Focus without changing layers.

I also cleaned up the TSI and deleted unused assignments. I will update tomorrow.

Flip + Effect Keys will take some time.

      Side Note: I forgot…
Range + Jog Wheel = Filter Amount
Range + Pitch Fader = Key Amount
Range + Back = Filter and Key at 0%
Range + Flip = Filter and Key at 0%

I am unable to do Range + PM Knob rotate = Move Loop. Native Support doesn’t allow me to program this correctly. It was very buggy. It either moved the loop or skipped you forward/backward in the song or did absolutely nothing.

NI Traktor handles the DN-HC4500 HID display which controls what is displayed. This means it’s not controlled by the user.

Programs like RPM can output either BPM or Percentage.

DJ Steve, “all your wildest dreams will come true” Tomorrow, I will upload a custom map for Stefan. This will not effect the regular mapping I’ve posted. I might add adjusting the Cue Type though.

      1. 1-5 Hot Cues work by pressing them. Flip + Hot Cue 1-5 deletes them.

      2. Cue Type Interaction Mode Inc/Dec doesn’t work in Traktor 2.0. I wanted to do Range + Cue 1-5 = Inc (Increase) Cue Type (Cycle through Cue Types). I entered an technical issue with NI.
      http://co.native-instruments.com/forum_de/showthread.php?t=141007

However, this is what I’ve been able to do:
Hot Cue 1-5 + Cue = Cue Point
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Exit/Reloop = Load Cue Point
Hot Cue 1-5 + Flip = Grid Point
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Pitch Bend – = Fade-In
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Pitch Bend + = Fade-Out
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Range = Loop

      3. With Display Mode, there is no “Famous skipping 1 time while scrolling 5 tracks”. However, in the latest Non-Display version I’ve posted, this was fixed. The PM Knob rotate in each direction was turned into two different buttons instead of a rotary knob.

      4. This only works for Deck A and Deck B:
Effect 1 = Internal Mode (Int) Green LED
Effect 2 = Relative Mode (Rel) Green LED
Effect 3 = Absolute Mode (Abs) Green LED
Pushing Play on both sides resets the Internal Mode

I disabled the Hot Cues from Playing the track. If your running Abs or Rel mode, it will automatically send it into Int mode. While paused, the Hot Cues will play until you release (Stutter). You can also hold down a Hot Cue and hit Play to continue playing.

      5. S4 Mapping Effect
Playlist = Only Browser Toggle (Enlarge)
PM Push = Loads song and Only Browser Toggle (Back to Previous Layout)

Even though you don’t use Deck C&D, they are still available:
Flip + Playlist = Deck C (Left Side) or Deck D (Right Side)

Make sure and go to Preferences/ Controller Manager/ Device/ Edit: and delete all previous MIDI mappings.

Fixed: Effect 1 Green LED was duplicated. It didn’t remember the last state from switching decks.

      Added:
Hot Cue 1-5 + Cue = Cue Point
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Exit/Reloop = Load Cue Point
Hot Cue 1-5 + Flip = Grid Point
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Pitch Bend – = Fade-In
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Pitch Bend + = Fade-Out
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Range = Loop

      I will upload tomorrow.

      Fixed:
Fixed right side Deck B and Deck D.
      Pitch/Key + Jog Wheel = Mixer Filter

      Need to Fix PDF:
      Pitch/Key + Jog Wheel = Mixer Filter
Incorrect: Pitch/Key + PM Knob = Mixer Filter

      I’m thinking about doing:
      Pitch/Key + Effect 1 = Single Effect
      Pitch/Key + Effect 2 = Group Effect

I’m doing more testing on Traktor 2.0.3.

baconbits, the effects work in version DN-HC4500 4 Decks 20110608. Whatever effect section your on, Group or Single, it turns it on and the light turns green. Flip + Jog Wheel Rotate controls the Dry/Wet.

I will do some testing tonight and upload an updated version tomorrow.

What i am doing wrong, am i missing some important information?

Hmm, I don’t have a Mac or the latest OS X Lion to test on. I plan on ordering a few iMacs for the office though. Maybe I can test that later this month.

I know Serato doesn’t support Lion yet. How about NI Traktor? Please keep me updated.

Traktor 2 seems to work with Lion:
On the NI user forum dj paul & davscanlon have no problems:
      http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=141379&page=2

Serato releases scratch live 2.3. They wrote: ‘Please note: if you have a new Mac Book Pro running a 10.7 kernel, you must update to OSX 10.6.8 for a fix to hardware related crashes.’.
Hm yes, ‘update’ from 10.7 to 10.6.8…. :-) Should be ‘downgrade’ off course. http://serato.com/downloads/scratchlive/2.3.0/releasenotes

      regards.

hm, i formatted my Mac with OS X Lion (10.7.1) and installed OSX Snow Leopard (10.6.8) again, then tractor v.2.0.3 and your DN-HC4500 4 Decks 201100608.tsi file. Still not working…
Anybody who can confirm if this .tsi file should work with the latest tractor v.2.0.3 on a Mac?

Installed on Lion. I ran everything similar to windows. Loaded my mapper and nothing. It wouldn’t even let me add Device Mapping LEARN a new button. Added a Generic MIDI device and it let me LEARN buttons when I pressed the DN-HC4500. I noticed the In-Port and Out-Port were set to all ports. Then I went through the Setup Wizard and select manufacturer: Denon with model: DN-HC4500. Low and behold it worked. The In/Out-Ports were DN-HC4500. Deleted NI 4500 mapper. Deleted the Generic MIDI I just created. Then I noticed my mapper (DN-HC4500 4 Decks 20110608), the In-Port and Out-Port was labeled n/a: DN-H. So I selected both the In-Port and Out-Port and changed them to DN-HC4500.

Long story short. Change the In-Port and Out-Port from n/a: DN-H to DN-HC4500. The mapper worked fine for me.

thanks for your investigation! But’s in not clear to me :-(
I have my denon conected tonight and tomorrow. I’m looking in the traktor 2.0.3 settings now at output input routing. But that does not seem to be what you explained by in-port and out port. I assume i don’t have to edit your .tsi file. Wouldn’t know how to do that. Hope you read this soon. Regards

No Problem. It took me 20 minutes to figure out what was wrong. I was very close to calling Denon (Silvio) to issue a error.

Once I update the mapper from 2.0.3, the In/Out-Port should be corrected in future TSI updates. However, Traktor 2.1.1 update is now online!

        New / improved features:
Individual Keylock, FX Enable and Headphone Cueing for sample deck slots
        Multi-core processor support
Automatic jogwheel calibration for Kontrol S2 and S4
New option for additional mixer headroom
        ID3 v2.3 Tag compatibility
        Option to disable Sample Auto-Save
Jump size display when hovering over stripe
        Improved Setup Wizard
Readibility of waveform display, phase meter and level meter improved
        Support for Kontrol S2

        Fixes
GUI tempo fader decoupled from Scratch and Tempo Bend
Pitch Bend behavior on stopped deck fixed
Cueing accuracy of CD timecode fixed
Core Audio sample rate matching fixed

Updated October 17, 2011. Tested Great with Traktor 2.1.1

Deleted Function + Flip/Exit/Cue/PitchBend-/PitchBend+ for different Cue Points. I will add them properly later.
I tried to hold down Function Key (Cues) + PM Rotary to scroll through the different Cues but it’s still inconsistent.
      Added:
Hot Cue 1-5 + Cue = Cue Point
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Exit/Reloop = Load Cue Point
Hot Cue 1-5 + Flip = Grid Point
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Pitch Bend – = Fade-In
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Pitch Bend + = Fade-Out
      Hot Cue 1-5 + Range = Loop

Flip + JogWheel on right side (Deck B/D) now = Wet/Dry

Rotary Acceleration from 0% to 100% on all Jog Wheel Scratch

Rotary Sensativity from 188% to 200% for Jog Wheel Pitch Bend.

      Still need:
[Flip] + [Eect] = FX Mode (LED Red when ON)
      Press [Flip] Again to Exit
      • Flip + Effect to adjust each effect with the Jog Wheel, select effects etc.
      • [Pitch/Key] + [Jog] rotate = Mixer Key Amount I will not add this.
      • [Pitch/Key] + Effect 1/2/3 = Combo Effects ala Ean Goldan
      This will take a while…

Maybe a question off topic … my laptop is a very old ‘aspire 1710′ 17inch.
This computer is not fast enough to do the trick with traktor .Latency is very big and loading off the tracks interrupts, the effects are interrupting sometimes so …
I like to buy a newer laptop just for playing around with traktor 1or2 .
Not downloading or anything else … apple mac pro should be great but certainly the most expensive one i believe so an second hand laptop should fit just in the budget …are the first buildyear 2006 mac pro still fast enough or are other laptop even good to use ?? thanks in advance …Maybe you guys can tell what specs off laptop that you are play with ?

      Best Regards,

      Andy,

I have a 2 year old HP laptop. slow i7 1.5 Ghz Quad Processor. I put a Intel SSD (Solid State Drive) 256 Gig and its ultra fast. Boots in 20 seconds and programs load very quickly. Fresh install of Windows 7. Optimized it using NI suggestions: http://www.native-instruments.com/forum/showthread.php?t=145510

NI just updated Traktor for Multi-core processor support.

Even though the next generation Intel processors were just released with minimal GHZ increase, they are a lot faster. I suggest getting a new laptop for $600-$800. However, I still have a Pentium 4 3.3Ghz Dell XPS from 8 years ago. I have it optimized and it runs Traktor and Scratch Live fairly well (higher latency).

Of course if you have the money, get an iMac with a SSD. I bought my wife a Mac Air for our anniversary last week. They all have SSD and that thing is fast. Everything is instant. It cold boots in 10 seconds.
