Macker Tourney wraps up 2011 play
The Gus Macker 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament was held this weekend at the Field of Dreams.
A total of 493 teams competed in this year’s event.
In the top men’s division, Skillz beat Young & Reckless in a best-of-three-game series to take home the trophy.
Skillz is a Las Cruces-based team, while Young & Reckless was anchored by former Las Cruces High School standout and New Mexico State Aggie Gordo Castillo.
“We take this team and travel to Mackers all around New Mexico,” said 33-year-old Rocky Gonzalez, a member of Skillz. “(Young & Reckless) was one of the hardest we’ve ever played.”
Other members of Skillz were 25-year-old players Jeremy Lawson, Kevin Moore and Fred Bellamy.
Typically drawing thousands of fans and participants from around the region, this year’s Gus Macker was no different, with a throng of bystanders watching Sunday’s championship game.
The tournament is a major fundraiser event for the Las Cruces Boys and Girls Club, and was expected to net about $23,000.
